Thomas Jefferson Coin or medal?
I would like to know information on a coin that says in the back “rebellion to tyrants is obedience to god” is says also Thomas Jefferson and Motto on seal C. 1776. in the front there is an illustration of some people helping to put up a trunk and it says Sons of Liberty. It has a gold color.
Picture:
That’s a medal. I don’t know who issued it.
Coins are issued by governments and are identified as from that issuing territory. Most, but not all, are dated the year of issue. A coin had monetary value at the time a government issued it. Obsolete coins with no monetary value may have numismatic value.
Medals and tokens may also have dates on them, but those dates don’t necessarily mean the year of issue. Some can, but most are dates commemorating some person, place or event. Medals and tokens fall under the numismatic sub-category of exonumia.
