
Chief of U.S. forces in Korea
WASHINGTON (AFP) — Defense Secretary Robert Gates named a new commander for United States forces in South Korea who is due to take over at a volatile moment on the peninsula. Gates said he would recommend General James Thurman, now the head of Army Forces Command, to succeed General Walter Sharp, who is set to retire after assuming his post in 2008.
