my black image displays as brown on the web. why?

when I open it up in adobe photoshop the background is black (#000000). when I upload it on the web it is clearly more brownish against my black page background. This happens with both .gif and .png formats.

I see it as black myself, but when doing something of this nature, it would always be best to save the image as a PNG and then set the background as transparent. This way your web color will always come through.
