Hidden Treasure in Colorado – Eight Sites to Search
Colorado is well know for it’s ghost towns, and mining camps. However, tales of many hidden treasures have been a part of Colorado lore for years. Across the State are areas where stories tell of outlaw caches from stagecoach robberies, bank heists, and Spanish buried treasures. The outlaw gangs of Jessie James and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, were known to travel these parts as well.
Here are eight places that have been rumored to hold lost treasures in Colorado.
Georgetown and the Silver Plume is located on I-70. This area produced vast amounts of gold and silver from 1859 until the early 1930′s. Many remnants of deserted buildings remain there. A search of the area with a metal detector may turn up some interesting treasures.
Leadville is located on U.S. 24 and State Rte 91. There was large gold discovery here in 1860. In later year’s it became an extremely large, silver-producing town. The town was abandoned in the early 1900′s. There are many remaining structures. Like the Silver Plume area above, a search with a metal detector would be a good idea.
The Reynolds Cache is an alleged treasure of buried gold somewhere in Hardcart Gulch, in Hall Valley. The gold was stolen by bandits who held up stagecoaches near the South Park mining camp.
The Will Bunch Gang supposedly buried $50,000 in gold nuggets and coins near Brown’s Hole.
The Butch Cassidy Gang may have buried more than $100,000 in bank money from robberies in a cave near Wild Mountain.
The Spanish Princess Treasure located near Mt. Princeton may contain a cache of gold ore and coins worth approx $100,000.
Treasure Mountain is located approximately three miles from the top of Wolf Creek Pass. Apparently, in 1790, a Frenchmen buried $3 million in gold bullion somewhere in the area.
The Purgatoire Canyon Treasure supposedly is worth approximately $12 million in gold. In the 1600′s, the Spaniards stole the gold from the Indians. The area where the treasure is buried is near the ghost town of Higbie, approximately twenty miles southwest of Las Animas. Spanish armor has been found in a cave in nearby Vogel Canyon.
Be sure to ask for permission if you are going on to private property, and if you are venturing on to State Lands, check to see if permits are given.
Good luck in your search for hidden treasure.
